What is a building information model? 

Quite simply it is a simulation of the construction and the finished building inside a computer with the advantage of being able to design in that environment. 

Autodesk Revit has an intuitive interface able to construct most types of buildings. Once the architectural aspects are taken care of, the model is exported to engineering versions for structural, mechanical and plumbing inputs.

Consultants work on whole or a part of the same project and using the same file. The file is accessed using sub domains where certain ingredients of the file are available for editing by qualified people. For instance, the mechanical consultant would not be able to move walls but will be able to suggest changes, while a structural consultant may be allowed. Changes made by structural consultant to the master file will be recorded as a special event for the architect.
