What is a building information
model?
Quite simply it is a simulation of
the construction and the finished building inside a computer with
the advantage of being able to design in that environment.
Autodesk Revit has an intuitive
interface able to construct most types of buildings. Once the
architectural aspects are taken care of, the model is exported to
engineering versions for structural, mechanical and plumbing
inputs.
Consultants work on whole or a
part of the same project and using the same file. The file is
accessed using sub domains where certain ingredients of the file
are available for editing by qualified people. For instance, the
mechanical consultant would not be able to move walls but will be
able to suggest changes, while a structural consultant may be
allowed. Changes made by structural consultant to the master file
will be recorded as a special event for the architect.
I personally feel Revit is a
one-person solution. A single person can honorably carry a larger
project with Revit than with any other software. The other benefit
is its relation with others of autodesk suite- AutoCAD, which has
been de facto for architectural presentation since decades. 70% of
the world's draftsmen use AutoCAD and its makers know it will
vanish in next 10 years!
Building Information Modeling is precursor
to a diverse arena where the model will find use after
construction of the building. Maintenance, Safety and energy
efficiency are those key areas where entrepreneurs will find
reasons to purchase your Model. Therefore developing ALL of your
projects in BIM will be your investment for future. As technology
seeps deeper into habitat so comes the need for automation.

As an architect you know that the

Autodesk knows that well enough. Transitioning to BIM is not a challenge
but an opportunity. If you are willing to take this leap then
there is a different world waiting for you.

functioning, there would be areas where the spaces and components
behave differently from your assumptions. Here, the BIM will
provide you analysis and feedback on how the functionality has
been achieved.
Considering that enterprising
people would want most physical assets of humans to be digitally
mapped such that maximum automation in movement and interaction
could be enabled, it would make real sense for you to invest your
time understanding BIM and do your development in this platform. I
can see companies approaching you to buy models of your BIM so
that intelligent machines can be installed at various places, in
near future.
